Purpose and Aims
Our focus is the Genealogy and History of individuals and families with the name with particular emphasis on those originating in the English county of Leicestershire. Descendants are known to have migrated to many other counties and other countries.
Extensive research was undertaken for the period up to circa 1970 by F.T.H. Elkington and A.E.H. Elkington.
As A.E.H.E. remarked, there is lots of scope for further research. For example:-
- the 1841 and 1851 Census of the major cities, such as London, were not extracted.
- informative family papers, such as wills, may have become available since 1970.
- the Census of England & Wales 1861 - 1901 have been released to the public.
One volume of the deposited work is entitled "Unconnected Records (Individuals and Families)". It should now be feasible to make many of those connections.
The work is not without omissions and errors and contains several assumptions. For example, it included the Australian descendants of Leicestershire origin but omitted the Scottish. These too can be "tidied up".
An "Elkinton" mailing list hosted by ROOTSWEB may be used to gather, disseminate and discuss pertinent information and ideas by anyone who is interested.
It is unlikely to be relevant once the origin of a family is known to be:-
Ellington other than of Leicesterhire, where it was a derivation of Eltington/Elkington,
Descendants of George Elkinton in America.
